Wilson Dam was named for President Woodrow Wilson. The T.V.A. acquired Wilson Dam from the War Department on May 18, 1933, the day President Roosevelt signed legislation creating the T.V.A. Wilson Dam is the T.V.A.'s largest conventional hydro plant.
The construction of Wilson Dam was started on April 14, 1918 and was completed April 14, 1924. The total cost of construction of the reservoir was $46,591,156 taking more than 11,902,313 man hours to complete. The dam itself contains 402,600 cubic yards of concrete. Wilson Dam and Reservoir was constructed for the purpose of electric power, flood control, navigation, recreation, an adequate supply of water and other related benefits.
The Dam is 137 feet tall and 4,541 feet long. The reservoir is 15,000 acres with a shoreline of 150 miles and 4 miles of island shoreline.
There was 31 injuries incurred during the construction of the dam and reservoir with 4 fatalities.
Wilson Lake is on the Tennessee River and is surrounded by Colbert and Lauderdale Counties in Alabama.
